What is Fabric Math?
Fabric Math is a free collection of online fabric calculators designed for quilters, sewists, and home decorators. Every tool solves one specific question: how much fabric do I need? We handle the unit conversions, rounding, and allowances so you can focus on the project.
The calculators run entirely in your browser, work on mobile, and require no account or sign-up. Your measurements stay on your device.
Our calculators
- Quilt Backing Calculator: find backing yardage, panel count, and seam layout for any quilt size.
- Quilt Binding Calculator: calculate how many strips to cut and how much binding fabric to buy.
- Curtain and Drapery Calculator: work out curtain yardage with fullness, pattern repeat, hems, and returns.
- Fabric Yardage Calculator: answer "how much fabric do I need?" for any number of cut pieces.
How we approach accuracy
Each calculator uses the same conventions that professional quilters and drapery workrooms use. Default fabric widths match real bolt widths (42 inches for quilting cotton, 54 inches for home-decor fabric). Results are rounded up to the nearest one-eighth yard or 0.1 meter so you always buy a little more rather than running short. Every calculator shows its full formula so you can verify the math yourself.
Imperial and metric
All calculators support both imperial (inches and yards) and metric (centimeters and meters). Tap the unit toggle in the header and every calculator updates instantly. Your preference is saved on your device.
Built for mobile
Fabric Math is designed to be used on a phone at the fabric store or cutting table. The interface is lightweight, fast-loading, and works on any modern browser without an app install.
